materials like ABS, nylon, Delrin, steel, aluminum, acrylic, poly-carbonate and more can be

Rapid Prototyping (RP) processes include Polyjet printing, Stereolithography (SLA), Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), and Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) from manufacturers such as 3D Systems, Stratasys, and EOS.
Some of the materials / resins used include Somos resins for SLA; Duraform resins for SLS; ABS, Polycarbonate, Ultem and PPSF for FDM. Metals for DMLS include steel, aluminum, cobaltchrome+titanium.
Prototype models can be used to evaluate the form, fit and feel of a design. They can also be used as master models (patterns) for additional processes such as casting or rapid tooling (rubber, urethane or epoxy) to produce parts in silicon rubber, urethane (flexible and rigid), aluminum, zinc, iron and steel.
For end use parts, some of the RP parts are usable, depending on geometry, material and application. CNC machining can produce precision functional parts in end use materials. 3 Axis and 5 axis machining is available for parts in ABS, Delrin (acetal), Renshape, aluminum and steel along with many others. Vacuum Forming of plastic materials such as Styrene, PETGAND and ABS can be a cost effective way to produce functional parts.
Injection moulding of plastic parts in small volumes with insert tools, or large volumes with dedicated moulds produces production parts to take to market.
Lastly, there are the traditional hand made models, where no 3D data exists or for sculptural shapes.
